Saturnalia were imperial festivities held in ancient Rome in honour of Saturn, god of agriculture.
For seven days in December, Rome was transformed and social norms were reversed in a celebration of freedom and a new agricultural year.
The spirit of those festivities travelled between peoples and across borders, surviving centuries later under different names and forms, shaped by the customs of those who welcomed them. In the villages of Trás-os-Montes in northern Portugal, rituals honouring freedom, youth and pagan gods carry the symbolism of other times. A celebration of life spreading through the crowd.
And the people dance.

This project by Companhia de Dança de Almada (Ca.DA) began with an original idea by Luís Malaquias and is based on a creation by São Castro. Filmmaker Cristina Ferreira Gomes was invited following her exemplary work on contemporary dance and the affinity felt between creators and dancers.
Through interdisciplinary collaboration and complementary languages and methods, the project sought to create a new work on a profound theme, raising awareness of environmental, social and cultural issues. Filmed entirely in Pinhal de Leiria, it reflects on the importance of learning to deal with loss.
