Dance is a deeply holistic discipline: it connects body and mind and offers us a different place from which to engage with life. Children who know their bodies can face reality differently, especially those experiencing difficult circumstances or extreme situations. Dance also enriches cognitive development through play and memorisation, and is fundamental to children’s psychomotor development. This pioneering project bringing dance into formal schooling in Campo Maior is a complementary and highly effective tool for children’s education.

“PALAVRAS QUE VOAM” (WORDS THAT SPEAK) is a choreographic work created with primary-school pupils through this Dance at School project. Some words are bigger than us: words of wishes, inspiration, motivation and struggle. In this performance, each pupil chose a word to send flying, to carry far, spread across the world and touch every heart. All of this through creativity, movement, dance, emotional expression, a sense of belonging and empathy.
